FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose tailor-made music over stock music from a library?

Stock music may be inexpensive, but it often feels generic and never quite fits. And in the worst case, your favorite competitor ends up using the exact same track. Tailor-made music is composed specifically for the story, pacing, and message of your film – and for your brand. You can shape the process with us, the music is created exclusively for you, and it can be tailored frame by frame to your campaign.

How quickly can you deliver a first music draft?

Post-production is almost always fast-paced, so we’re used to working quickly. In most cases, we can deliver a first music draft within 48 hours.

What does the process for creating campaign music look like?

The earlier we’re involved, the better. We develop first music drafts before the edit starts or alongside it, refine the track in close creative collaboration with the edit, and fine-tune it frame by frame. Once picture is locked, we take care of the final mixing and mastering.

How much does tailor-made music for a campaign cost?

You can start with an initial music draft for a manageable budget, without committing to the full production. If the direction feels right, we produce and finalize the track. We’ll give you a clear and transparent cost overview in a short call.

How do usage rights and licenses work, and what do they cost?

The production fee covers the creation of the music. Usage rights give you the right to use and broadcast the finished track. The license consists of two parts:

- Master rights
These cover the recording and artistic production of the music. TONIQ licenses them directly to you for a defined purpose and period at a fixed fee. Our goodie: If your commercial runs on TV, we waive this direct license fee for the first year.

- Copyright / authors’ rights
These compensate the composers and authors of the music and are administered and invoiced by SUISA. The amount depends on the actual use of the work. For linear media, the corresponding SUISA licence fees are integrated into the media budget, so there’s nothing you need to handle separately. For online usage, the licence fee amounts to 2.15% of the media budget and is invoiced directly to you. It’s therefore important to include it in the budget from the start.

Are there SUISA licence fees for the music?

Yes. To ensure that the composers and authors involved are fairly compensated, TONIQ registers the music we create with SUISA. Depending on how the music is used, the corresponding licence fees are charged accordingly: for linear media, to the broadcaster; for online usage, to the client. We’ll of course provide all the information required for the registration.

Is stock music exempt from SUISA licence fees for TV campaigns?

No. That’s a common myth. Even music from major production music platforms is subject to SUISA licence fees when broadcast on television or radio. Those fees are integrated into the media budget – just as they are when you commission tailor-made music from us.

Do I also get shorter versions for cutdowns?

Absolutely. Campaigns rarely exist in just one 30-second version today. On request, we provide different lengths and adaptations – for example 15-second or 6-second versions – even if the edit shifts again during post-production.

What do you need to create a first music draft for a campaign?

Ideally, a pitch deck or storyboard so we can get a feel for the visual world. But one or more reference tracks or a mood playlist can also be enough. We also recommend a short call with the director or agency to align expectations and avoid misunderstandings from the start.

Do you use AI in music production – and aren’t you making yourselves obsolete?

Yes to the first part. Definitely not to the second. We use AI as an accelerator for inspiration and to make wild ideas audible within seconds – both the good ones and the bad ones. AI gives us new raw material. The spark, the instinct, and the musical direction still come from people.

What about copyright when using AI-generated music?

At the moment, the legal situation is still unclear. Many AI generators have been trained on copyrighted material without the necessary rights having been obtained. Using pure AI output unchanged in campaigns or other commercial contexts can therefore carry significant compliance risks. That’s a risk we’re not willing to pass on to our clients – or take ourselves.
